Deadly Hit And Run Suspect Appears In Court

A man arrested for a hit & run crash that killed a motorcyclist in south Omaha last week made his first court appearance on Monday afternoon.

A judge set bail at $2 million for Luis Velasquez-Ortiz.  Police say Velasquez was driving northbound on 32nd St. when he collided with Juan Moreno-Tamayo, who was eastbound on Q St. on his motorcycle.

Velasquez then left the scene of the accident and was arrested the following day.  In court it was learned that Velasquez is not a legal resident and comes from Guatemala.  If Velasquez posts bond, immigration officials are prepared to detain him.

He also has prior felony convictions for DUI and drug possession.  Velasquez has lived in Omaha for 15 years and worked for Nebraska Beef.
