Knife, Stolen Shotgun Found During Traffic Stop

A malfunctioning headlight led to big time trouble for a Lincoln man early Sunday morning.  Lincoln Police say they saw a Nissan Maxima with driver's side headlight not working around 2:00 a.m. near 27th and Cornhusker Highway.

After making an improper turn, the officer tried to stop the car, but the driver sped away.  The vehicle eventually struck a curb and was stopped near 20th and Yolande Streets.   When the officer got out of his cruiser and approached the vehicle, the driver once again accelerated and drove up onto another curb on N 20th Street.

When the driver, 31 year old Dewayne Johns, was asked to exit the car, police say a knife with a 4.5-inch blade fell from his lap.  In addition, a loaded shotgun with a sawed-off barrel was found in the vehicle.

The shotgun had previously been reported stolen in November 2017.  A glass pipe with suspected methamphetamine was also located in the car and Johns was arrested.
