Boys Town Hosts Beeping Easter Egg Hunt For Visually Impaired Children

Easter egg hunts are always a fun activity kids in the Spring, but some children don't get to participate due to vision impairments. That is why the Boys Town National Research Hospital started offering their Beeping Easter Egg Hunt.

For the 13th year, the hospital will give families with children who are visually impaired the chance to partake in a number of Spring activities. Spokeswoman Kristal Platt says the hunt is a special opportunity for these families. "This egg hunt is so unique, and so enjoyed by families. When families take their children with vision loss to a public egg hunt, you can imagine kids go out and they wanna try to get as many eggs as possible. If you're not able to see to find those eggs, it can be very disheartening and frustrating for the parents and for the children."

Children with visual impairments and their siblings can search for the Easter eggs, which emit a beeping sound. Once found, eggs can be traded for treats and prizes, including Braille and large print books.

Platt says the hunt has made an impact on families, who say they love that everyone can participate. "I just got an email from a family today who said they are so grateful that the siblings are involved. Sometimes the siblings just sit on the sideline and watch their brothers and sisters who have vision loss participate in activities and they can't. So the fact that the whole family can come and enjoy is unique, it's just really a wonderful event."

Other activities include access to the Hall of History exhibits and photos with live animals including a lamb and a furry Easter bunny.

Anyone wanting to participate can call Kristal Platt by 10:00 AM Saturday morning at 531-355-6365. The indoor hunt will be on Saturday at 3:00 PM at the Hall of History on the Boys Town Campus, 14057 Flanagan Boulevard.
