Omaha Public Schools non-teaching staff members packed the school board meeting Monday night to voice concerns about proposed changes to the pay schedule of non-teaching staff.
Currently, staff members including paras, transportation, nutrition and office personnel that work 10 months out of the year are paid over a 12 month period. OPS wants to change the schedule so that the employees are paid for the ten months they actually work.
Pay rates would not change but many are upset they won't have a steady paycheck year round. "I've heard the argument that they'll still be earning the aggregate amount of money so they should be able to budget for those two months. That tone is as tone deaf as let them eat cake." said one staff member during the meeting.
OPS says that the change will reduce compliance issues and is similar to what many metro area school districts already do. The district currently plans to implement the change starting August 1st.
