Omaha Police Release Timeline Of Chase, Shooting

Omaha Police have released a timeline and more details surrounding Thursday's pursuit that resulted in an officer and the suspect going to the hospital.

According to investigators the Omaha Police Gang Unit was conducting a drug surveillance operation on 21 year old Micah Taylor around 2:15 p.m.  After the drug transaction, officer David Staskiewicz followed Taylor on Ames Avenue as he pulled onto southobund Highway 75.

Staskiewicz stopped Taylor north of the Lake Street on-ramp. Taylor refused to get out of the vehicle- and drove forward when Staskiewicz opened the door and tried to grab his arm and pull him out of the car.   Staskiewicz was dragged and fired three shots at the fleeing vehicle.  Taylor suffered a minor neck wound.

Officers from the Gang Unit and police helicopter followed Taylor on Highway 75 until stop sticks caused him to crash just south of L Street.  Police say Taylor got out of the car with his arms raised, and officers took him into custody without any other use of force.

Taylor will be booked on a felony domestic violence warrant out of Sarpy county as soon as he's released from the hospital. He'll also face charges of assault on an officer, flight to avoid arrest- and other counts related to the chase. Officer Staskiewicz is on administrative duty- per departmental policy.

Officer Staskiewicz is 49-years old and a 19-year veteran of the Omaha Police Department.  "Based on the evidence we can verify at this time, which includes multiple sources of video, Officer Staskiewicz’s use of deadly force was reasonable and justified," says Chief Todd Schmaderer

The investigation is ongoing with interviews still to be conducted.  Anyone who has any other information or who witnessed this incident is urged to contact the Omaha Police Homicide Unit at 402-444-5656 or Crime Stoppers at 444-STOP (7867).
