A man considered a person of interest in the disappearance and death of Sydney Loofe is going against a judge's suggestion and representing himself in court.
On Wednesday, Aubrey Trail spoke with a judge about representing himself in an upcoming trial in which he faces fourteen charges of Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property. Each of the fourteen charges carry a possible sentence of ten years in prison.
In a letter from a prison in Leavenworth, Kansas, Trail asked Judge Cheryl Zwart to represent himself, to which the judge strongly advised against. In the letter, Trail said there was lack of access to his lawyer, who is located in Nebraska.
Judge Zwart told Trail he should consider keeping Korey Reiman on as his attorney saying, “I want you to understand what you are up against here.” Trail responded by saying he knew what he would be up against by representing himself at the trial, which is set to start on March 26th.
Trail told the judge that he believed representing himself would be his best shot at getting an acquittal, to which Zwart told him, “I must advise you, in my opinion, a trained lawyer will defend you far better in this case.”
Judge Zwart didn't make an official ruling, ordering Trail to meet with Reiman once more to discuss the case before a final decision is made.
