Last September, President Donald Trump set a March 5th deadline for Congress to come up with a replacement for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program. If there was no solution the program would end. This would impact about 4,000 DREAMers currently living in this state.
Alexis Steele is an attorney with the Immigration Legal Center In Nebraska and told NewsRadio 1110 KFAB, "Because of some preliminary injunctions that came out of California and New York with cases regarding DACA, those injunctions have temporarily prevented the Trump Administration from affecting the rescission of DACA but the effect of these injunctions is only temporary. While "today" hasn't yet come into legal effect it is extremely symbolic and extremely important and everyday there is new urgency because there is no stability until we have a real solution."
Events planned for today in Nebraska and around the country are to send clear messages to Congress to pass a clean DREAM Act.
Several communities are taking part in events. A candlelight vigil will be at the Capitol Building in Lincoln starting at 5:30. Speakers will include Nebraska Dreamers and faith leaders.
There will be a "Stop Playing Games" vigil at Memorial Park in Omaha starting at 6 p.m.
There is a screening of "We Are Dreamers" documentary starting at 7 p.m. at Doane University in Crete. There was a "We All Belong" community gathering in Lexington yesterday. Members of Centro Hispano in Columbus made the trip to Washington D.C. to participate in the United We Dream National March.
