Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse is lashing out at President Donald Trump over his comments that trade wars are "easy to win."
Trump has announced he wants to place new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. "Trade wars are never won. Trade wars are lost by both sides, Sasse says." He responded after President Trump insisted on Friday that "trade wars are good, and easy to win."
"Kooky 18th century protectionism will jack up prices on American families — and will prompt retaliation from other countries," Sasse says. "Make no mistake. If the President goes through with this, it will kill American jobs — that's what every trade war ultimately does."
Trump says the U.S. will impose punishing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, escalating tensions with China and other trading partners and raising the prospect of higher prices for American consumers and companies.
