Birds Of Different Feathers Flocking To Desoto

The spring migration is on in Missouri Valley, Iowa.  In recent days snow geese on their way to their nesting grounds up north have filled the lake at  DeSoto and Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge.

Park Ranger Peter Rea says they have picked up a lot of waterfowl over the past two days. "The viewing from our visitors center is great right now."  Rea says it's not clear how long the winged travelers will be in town.

"We encourage people to come and enjoy it while we have it.  We can't guarantee it's going to last a week from now, but it's really good right now," Rea says.  He says the number of visitors have increased after sharing pictures on their Facebook page.

"A lot of people are calling and coming out and flocking to us like the geese are, and we're excited about that."   In addition to the snow geese, Rea says there are a number of ducks and eagles to view.

During the spring and fall, Boyer Chute’s wetlands become a temporary home for a variety of waterfowl and shorebirds.

If you have questions about viewing the birds call the visitors center at 712-388-4800.
