Omaha Police Captain Issues School Challenge

In the wake of the tragic shootings in Florida and following numerous threats at school in the metro area last week Omaha Police Captain Ken Kanger has issued a challenge to his fellow officers.

"Visit your school on duty. Retired officers, visit, volunteer at lunch, walk the halls, talk to classrooms. Even if it is for 30 minutes."  Kanger's says his challenge is meant to highlight what police officers do to combat violence in schools and let students and teachers know the officers are there for them.

"I just think it's an easy way make students and teachers feel a little bit more comfortable, have a little bit more law enforcement presence in the school and talk to our kids about some of the things going on in the country." Kanger says.

Kanger says he has personally visited school and has encouraged the officers that work for him to do the same.

"We have a platform to be able to take it to another level and make sure people know that we're in the schools.  Especially anybody if there ever considering any harm or anything of a negative nature those individuals know there's law enforcement in schools almost every day."
