Coping With The Aftermath Of Florida School Shooting

In the aftermath of a crisis like Wednesday's school shooting in Florida parents all over the country are grappling with how to talk to their kids about the devastation.

Dr. Tom Reimers is the head of the Boys Town Behavioral Health Clinic and says  parents must take the lead role in supporting their children, promoting the healing process and encouraging a return to normalcy, immediately after the event and in the months that follow.

"It's important for parents to address their children's specific concerns," Reimers says.  He says being available to listen and give kids the time and space they need to sort through and share what they're feeling is important to helping them cope.

Reimers says parents also should encourage their children to return to their regular activities as soon as possible. This means getting back to school, continuing involvement in academics, sports, music and church, and socializing with friends.
