Omaha Science Teacher Dies On His Way To Work

A longtime teacher at Kiewit Middle School died during his commute to work Tuesday morning.  7th-grade science teacher David Markley died while driving to work.

The school said the cause of death was a heart attack that led to his vehicle going off the road near Blair High Road near State Street.   Millard Superintendent Dr. Jim Suftin says the 61-year-old teacher had a knack for connecting with students and loved being a science teacher.

"It's a very sad day," Sutfin said. "David Markley was a beloved teacher. He was the go-to guy at Kiewit Middle School. You never saw him the hallway without kids around him."

Markley taught at the school for ten years and had a huge rock collection.  Markley got students so enthused about science that the science club had to break into sections because so many kids wanted to be part of it.

Markley's death comes six months after another popular Kiewit science teacher died in a crash.  49 year old Brett Rhodes was killed near 204th and F Streets last August.

"The compounding effect of the loss two cherished teachers is having an impact on Kiewit Middle  "The kids will need some time to process this."
