Plans For New Drive-In Movie Theater Approved By County Board

After months of back and forth and planning a new drive-in movie theater was given the green light Tuesday morning.

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners approved Jeff and Jenny Karls' plans to build the theater at the corner of Highway 36 and 300th Street. The board was originally slated to vote on the measure weeks ago, but it was delayed until concerns from farming neighbors could be addressed.

As the plan stands, the drive-in will be a one screen theater with a roughly 400 car capacity. Under the conditions of the deal, there are plans in place to address traffic congestion by having two entrances that have queuing areas, so cars won't be backed up into traffic. Under the current plans, 300th Street could eventually be paved, which would provide extra relief from traffic congestion.

The Karls hope to have construction begin on the theater, named The Quasar, this year. They plan on having the 1960's styled Quasar open by May of 2019. Once open it would be open Friday and Saturday nights, with the possibility of Thursday showings, from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
