How To Make Healthier Choices During Super Bowl

The drinks and snacks will be flowing at parties during Sunday's Super Bowl, but that doesn't mean you have to get off track if you're looking trying to eat healthier.

Nebraska Medicine Dietitian Rebecca Kraay says there are some simple ways of cutting back on calories. "Utilizing like a low-fat, plain Greek yogurt can be used as a good alternative for a mayo or a sour cream that you might find in dip."

Kraay says you can also make an easy swap when it comes to what you're scooping that dip up with. "Maybe consider utilizing your vegetables to dip into your dip instead of crackers or chips."There is always one dish that Kraay says is a healthy fan favorite...chili. "Packed with good fiber, good protein, a good crowd pleaser, but a healthy option as well." Kraay says you can also choose healthier options for toppings by using Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and opting for a low-fat cheese.

It isn't just food that gets people off track during the Super Bowl, Kraay says drinks can pack in the calories too. "Instead of using juice or regular soda as your mixing ingredient, maybe consider using a diet soda, a carbonated flavored water, a Crystal Light or some of those lower calorie alternatives." Kraay also suggests reaching for a light beer if barley and hops are more your style.

The last bit of advice Kraay says to remember, is that if you do get off track during the festivities, don't let it ruin your whole plan."With the Super Bowl, I think it's important to remember that it is just one day, so don't worry about it too much. Always just try to get back on track the next day."
