Frozen Pipes Costly For Nebraskans In 2017

Winter is far from over and frozen pipes last year cost Nebraskans hundreds of thousands of dollars.

State Farm Insurance alone paid out nearly $900,000, about $12,000 per claim, for frozen pipes in Nebraska.

Agent Anthony Anderson has some tips to keep your pipes from freezing. "At night a lot of times people like to set their thermostat a little lower as their getting snuggled up under blankets and what not, but it's actually best to leave your thermostat at the same temperature both during the daytime and at night." Anderson also suggests leaving cupboard doors and drawers open to allow warm air to circulate, as well as letting faucets drip if they're next to an exterior wall.

Anderson says if your pipes do freeze, stay calm and call a professional. "Number one, don't panic. A frozen pipe doesn't mean that it's going to burst or anything of that nature. Turn on your faucet and if nothing comes out, leave them on and call a plumber, and don't try to thaw your pipes out with a torch or an open flame."
