Omaha Public Schools are reminding parents to be on alert because of a possible abduction attempt. On Monday, a Nathan Hale Middle School student reported that a person pulled over while they were waiting at their stop and tried to have a conversation with them.
OPS officials say the student acted quickly by calling their parent and running home. The incident was reported to police and the school district notified parents and guardians in a letter shortly after.
School officials ask parents and guardians to share the following safety tips with students as a reminder:
1. Walk with a friend.
2. Always refuse to go anywhere with strangers.
3. Students are not expected to help adults with directions, lost pets or other items.
4. If a driver stops, and the driver attempts to ask for help, children should run away.
5. In potentially dangerous situations, students should make lots of noise to alert neighbors, run to a safe place or find an adult they can trust.
