Second Sexual Assault At Bellevue Group Home Worries Neighbors

For the second time in less than a year, a rape has occurred at a group home for people with intellectual disabilities in Bellevue.

Bellevue Police say they believe a 44 year old patient, Brian Park, raped a roommate who was either physically or mental unable to resist his advances.

Park was booked into Sarpy County Jail on Friday, but neighbors near the group home are just now finding out about the incident and that worries them. Homeowner's Association President Mark Simanek tells 6 News the home, run by Community Supports Inc., has been a concern to neighbors for a while. "We had one kid that came up and was caving car doors in. The counselors over there are not in control. I would like them to move out of this area."

In April 2017 a caretaker was strangled and raped by Jesse Alvarez-Rodriguez, another patient at the home.

State Senator Carol Blood, who represents Bellevue in the Unicameral, tells 6 News that neighbors feel like they are living in fear due to the violent actions of some of the patients. "It's not right that they're holding this neighborhood hostage. You cannot eliminate group homes like this based on one bad apple. Unfortunately it's a very bad apple and I certainly don't want to throw people out on the streets but surely the residents aren't safe there either."

Community Supports Inc. sent 6 News the following statement in response to the most recent incident:

“It is devastating to us when a community member that we support violates the law in this or any other circumstances. Community Supports, Inc. takes pride in supporting Nebraskans that have significant support needs in their communities and we work to keep everyone safe. Despite our best efforts, this is not always possible. We continue to work cooperatively with the Bellevue Police Department on this case.”
