Retro Drive-In Planned For Metro Area

Remember heading to a drive-in movie on a double feature on a Friday or Saturday night?  Jenny and Jeff Karls are hoping that metro area families will make new memories at their planned drive-in named "The Quasar" on Highway 36th at 300th Street.

Jeff Karls tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB, "The way it is planned, we have 40 acres there.  We have room for two screens with lots of green space.  The first phase is a single 100 foot by 50 foot screen with a 420 car field."

And what is a drive-in without a snack bar.  Karls says he wants to make this theater a destination and have people arrive at 7 p.m. for a 9 p.m. movie.  To make that happen you need a great snack bar with an excellent menu.  He says their plans call for a retro version with a lot of extras.   He says, "We want them to come out and spend the evening.  You want the kids to play and make an evening of it.  For most of the ones that we've toured and been to around the country it is a value to the customers.  Have an adult admission and kids under 12 free.  They get a double feature and get a great value for their money that way."

Karls says their proposal was approved by the Douglas County Planning Commission and was scheduled to go before the Douglas County Board today.  Then the hurdle.  Karls says, "The main issue we have right now is some discussion that needs to take place with a neighbor.  There was a letter submitted yesterday afternoon before our scheduled meeting this morning at 9 o'clock that raised some concerns, most of which have already been covered with our work with the Council.  We have worked with both the state and the county with our plans to ramp up for this meeting."  He says they have a meeting scheduled this week with the neighbor to discuss  concerns and hopefully put those worries to rest.  Karls says they want this theater to have a positive impact for the entire area.

The Douglas County Board now has the theater on their February 6th agenda.  If all goes as planned Karls plans to break ground this summer and hopefully be running at full speed by the 2019 movie going season.
