Gun Found In Child's Backpack During Traffic Stop

A 19 year old woman has been arrested after Lincoln police say they found a gun next to a diaper in a child's backpack during a Sunday morning traffic stop.

Police stopped Casey Maxfield for making an improper turning and failing to signal for a lane change near 33rd Street and Cornhusker Highway around 1:45 a.m.

Officer Angela Sands tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB the officer said he smelled marijuana and asked Maxfield and her passenger to get out of the vehicle.  The officer was searching a child's backpack in the backseat when the passenger took off running.

Officers then found the gun, which had the serial number scratched off, next to a diaper in the backpack. There was no child inside the car at the time.  Police also found a small amount of marijuana in the center console.

Sands says Maxfield was arrested for possession of a defaced firearm, possession of marijuana and possession of a concealed weapon.

Police say they know the identity of the suspect who ran and are searching for him.
