Man Sentenced For Killing Woman Caught In Gang Gunfire

In a Douglas County courtroom on Monday Michael Goynes was sentenced to life in prison for the 2016 murder of Barbara Williams.

She was shot to death outside her apartment just west of Fontenelle Park.  Goynes was convicted for First Degree Murder, Use of a Weapon and Illegal Possession of a Weapon in November.

Witness testimony identified Goynes was the person who fired the fatal shot in April 2016.  The 55 year old Williams was the mother of nine and grandmother of 17. Authorities said she was the victim of a drive-by shooting near 48th and Boyd streets.

Police said the shooter got out of a car and fired a number of rounds at two individuals from a rival gang. Williams was in the wrong place at the wrong time and was killed.

The defense argued that Goynes was far away from the scene at the time of the murder, attending a cookout. They said they had a cell phone picture with time and date stamp to prove it, but prosecutors said that picture had been doctored.
