For the past several years an Omaha couple have planned honor flights to Washington, D.C. for veterans from various conflicts. Now, Bill and Evonne Williams have decided to do another trip, this one just for women.
Evonne Williams tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB the Nebraska Female Veterans Flight is for women who served in the European or Pacific theaters during World War II, in Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War or in Afghanistan or Iraq.
"A lot of us forget there are so many women who play a major role in any war, whether it's behind the scenes or, as we know now with Irag and Afghanistan, they're right there," Williams says.
She says they recently found a 98 year old woman from World War II who wants to make the trip. Plans call for a charter aircraft with an all-female crew to fly 135 veterans, volunteer assistants, and media members to fly to D.C. to see the World War II, Korea and Vietnam Memorials.
"We'll go to Arlington and observe the changing of the guard ceremony and visit the women's memorial. The tentative date is Sept. 24.
If you know a female veteran who would like to go on the trip, you can fill out the application here.
