On a brutally cold morning members of the Omaha Black Firefighters Association along with the Omaha Police Department turned out to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Firefighters and police officers laid a wreath at the King Memorial sight near 24th and Lake street. Many elected officials attended the ceremony and talked about how Dr. King would react to our country and our community if he were alive today.
"We still have a lot of work to do but we're on our way to getting there because we have partnerships in this community that I think are the envy of this country, maybe the world," says Omaha City Council President Ben Gray.
Mayor Jean Stothert said that "Dr. King helped lead our country to great change and he challenged each of us to do exactly the sam so now it is our responsibility to see that his words and actions and his hopes for an equal, just and tolerant America continues."
Congressman Don Bacon also attended the ceremony and told 6 News "One of the things I really appreciated about him was he talked about peaceful protest, civility, stand up for what's right but doing it in a dignified way. We need more of that today. We have a lot of rancor and I believe our president needs to do a better job of setting that bar. All the way down we need to set that bar better."
