Convenience Store Camera Leads To Des Moines' Man Arrest

Douglas County authorities say a Des Moines man was arrested Wednesday after deputies found drugs in a vehicle that he claimed he wasn't driving.

Investigators say a deputy saw a 2017 Jeep Wrangler eastbound on I-80 near 84th Street travelling outside its lane. The deputy also observed a second vehicle following closely behind the Jeep, preventing him from initiating a traffic stop.

At 60th Street the Jeep quickly exited the Interstate.  The Jeep continue northbound and parked in the lot of the Mega Saver convenience store at 60th and Grover. When the Deputy arrived he found the Jeep parked unoccupied and a man resembling the driver standing outside the store.

When asked if he was the driver of the Jeep, the man said no and that he was waiting for an Uber driver. Investigators say the deputy became suspicious of the activity and deployed his drug dog to walk around the vehicle.

The dog detected the odor of narcotics and the driver was temporarily detained while the deputy requested video from the convenience store. The video revealed the driver of the Jeep was the same man standing outside the store.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a suitcase and duffle bag filled with suspected marijuana totaling just under 25 pounds  27 year old Ryah King was arrested and booked for possession with the intent to deliver more than a pound of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp.
