A winter storm watch is in effect for the Omaha metro as a a storm system takes aim at most of Nebraska and parts of Iowa.
Although the early part of the week will see incredibly mild temperatures for January, that warm air has some nasty weather right behind it. Rain on Wednesday will switch over to snow through the evening and into Thursday. Temperatures will plummet on Thursday forcing wind chills down below zero.
Strong wind gusts up to 40 MPH will create blowing and drifting snow, causing low visibility and potentially treacherous road conditions. Snow fall is expected between three and five inches, with higher amounts in some areas. Rapidly falling temperatures Wednesday night may cause wet surfaces to freeze quickly, leaving a layer of ice beneath the snow.
Travel during the Thursday morning commute will likely be difficult, so be sure to give yourself extra time.
