Passenger Causes Car To Crash On Railroad Tracks During Traffic Stop

Council Bluffs Police are searching for a man they say caused a car to crash into some railroad tracks early Monday morning.

Authorities say officers tried to stop a Monte Carlo around 1:30 a.m. near 12th and 5th Ave. because the car had expired registration. As the officer went to stop the vehicle, Police say a passenger grabbed the steering wheel causing an abrupt turn onto south 12th Street. The car left the roadway, hit a set of Union Pacific railroad tracks and became disabled.

Investigators say that passenger then fled from the car and officers detained the others in the vehicle.  They were eventually released.

Union Pacific was contacted to inspect the tracks for damage and the vehicle was towed from the scene. The tracks did not sustain any damage in the incident.

The passenger has not been located at this time. Anyone with information in reference to this case is encouraged to contact the Council Bluffs Police Department at (712) 328-4728 or Crime Stoppers at (712) 328 - STOP (7867).
