A 31 year old York man was shot after authorities say he tried to flee in a Seward County Sheriff's deputy patrol car Saturday morning.
Investigators say 31 year old Cody Nielsen is a suspect in several vehicle thefts in Seward and York counties. The sheriff's department says around 9:00 Saturday morning they got a report of a vehicle that had crashed into a ditch. As a deputy responded, another call came in for an attempted home invasion in Milford. The caller said the intruder had attacked the homeowner before running away.
When the deputy arrived in the area of the home invasion he spotted a man who fit the description of the suspect. The deputy approached him and authorities say the suspect refused to obey commands. They say he became violent and tried to get away in the deputy's patrol unit.
The deputy twice deployed a Taser, but did not have an effect on the man. Authorities say the suspect was again ordered to the ground. He ignored the command. At that point the deputy shot him, then initiated medical care while rescue crews responded.
That suspect turned out to be Nielsen. He's being treated for the gunshot wound that is not considered to be life-threatening.
He was taken into custody for a parole violation and several felonies. The deputy remains on leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
