Jail Time And Probation For Driver In Deadly Accident

The driver involved in a deadly crash last year has been sentenced to jail and probation.

On Thursday, a judge sentenced Alan Solarana to fourteen days in jail and two years probation for the motor vehicle death of Omaha construction worker Salvatore Fidone.

Solarana had admitted that he was at fault when his car drifted out of his lane in a construction zone and struck 48 year old Fidone as he got out of his work truck. At the time of the incident, Fidone was part of a street maintenance crew working on patching potholes in southwest Omaha.

Fidone was transported to the hospital after the crash and died several days later.

In addition to the jail time and probation, Solarana was also ordered to complete 80 hours of community service, which will include giving speeches on distracted driving. Although Solarana was distracted when the incident happened, evidence showed he was not on his phone or texting at the time of the crash. Solarana is also not allowed to drive anywhere besides work for the duration of his probation.

Solarana will also continue receiving mental health counseling, as he was diagnosed with PTSD.
