Update: AAA reports that the phone issues have been resolved.
Record low temperatures combined with a long holiday weekend resulted in a lot of vehicles not starting today in the Omaha metro area. AAA Nebraska's Rose White says calls for roadside assistance are up 185% today compared to a few weeks ago. She says thousands of people need roadside assistance today, mostly jump starts. Those needing help may have to wait just a bit longer.
White says, "Unfortunately, our contact centers are experience phone system issues which are affecting all lines of business including Emergency Road Assistance Operations. We expect continued delays in roadside assistance throughout today, January 2nd." Those in immediate need of assistance may want to contact another mechanic or tow truck service and submit their bills to AAA for reimbursement for services covered by their membership plan.
White says they apologize for the inconvenience as they continue to work to restore full communication and to serve members who are experiencing delays. White says AAA anticipates the phone situation to be resolved soon and members should continue to call if they need assistance.
White says those experiencing a vehicle break-down and feel they are in danger to call *55. That will connect drivers to 911. That number should be used in only emergency situations.
AAA says it is because of cold emergencies like this they recommend keeping a winter car kit handy in case of a break-down on the road. That includes a sleeping bag, blankets, extra hats, gloves, a heavy coat and socks.
