Omaha New Year's Eve Celebration Postponed

The brutally cold weather that is in the forecast this weekend has forced organizers of the Holiday Lights Festival to postpone annual New Year’s Eve fireworks show on Sunday evening.

The fireworks show at the Gene Leahy Mall will be moved to Saturday, January 6 at 7:00 with a brief ceremony and countdown by Mayor Jean Stothert.

"The safety of the public is our greatest concern, and with the possibility of dangerously low temperatures, we feel it is in the best interest of the community to reschedule this year’s fireworks show," said Marc Nichols, the volunteer executive director for Downtown Omaha, Inc.

The temperature Sunday night is forecast to be near -17.
