The Nebraska State Historical Society added five Nebraska locations that will be included in the National Register of Historic Places. David Calease is the National Register Coordinator and says all five places have been are deemed worthy of preservation.
Calease says, "The five properties that have been added, three of them are downtown historic districts in Neligh, Grand Island and Kearney. There are two individual properties in Omaha, one being the Chiodo Apartments and the other being the On Leong Tong Building."
The Chiodo Apartments near 25th and Marcy Street was designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style and was built in 1918. Since construction it has served as a multiple unit residential complex as it continues today.
The Truax Laundry building or the On Leong Tong House was built in the early 20th century as a commercial building. It once housed a Chinese-American Merchants' Association. The group provided assistance to members of Omaha's Chinese community and was a meeting center for celebrations.
The Grand Island Historic District contains 64 contributing resources, the Kearney Historic Downtown District contains 99 resources and in Neligh 41. All represent the commercial development of those areas. The National Register was developed to recognize historic places throughout the country.
