Thousands Of Children To Receive Gifts Through Project Santa

There is nothing quite like the smile on a child's face when they open up their gifts on Christmas, but for many struggling families they can't provide their kids with the Christmas they deserve.

Open Door Mission President Candace Gregory says that is where their Project Santa comes in to help. "This program empowers working poor families to be able to provide for their families through the holidays, but also to be able to pay their bills and prevent homelessness."

On Saturday, Gregory says volunteers will hand out toy bags to thousands of families during their "Drive-Thru" Christmas. "Hundreds of volunteers will distribute the toy bags by age and gender to parents so they have gifts to put under the tree for Christmas morning."

Not only will the kids receive toys, but Gregory says they received a donation of 20,000 books. "Every child will receive eight to ten books, and what a wonderful time through the holidays when school is out, that children will have a brand new book to crack open and read."

Families will also receive food and diapers during the event where over 6,400 children will benefit from the generosity of the Omaha metro community.
