Hospital Staff Brightens Holidays For Cancer Patients

As a medical oncologist who specializes in treating lymphoma patients at Nebraska Medicine, Dr. Greg Bociek knows how difficult the cancer battle can be, especially during the holiday season.

“It’s tough for our patients,” says Dr. Bociek. “Many of them are hundreds of miles from home with limited resources and are going through the most stressful time of their lives.”

In an effort to make things a little more merry and bright for patients, families and hospital staff, Dr. Bociek played the piano as staff members sang Christmas carols for nearly an hour on Thursday.

"This is just one of those moments to come and experience a little bit of joy, little bit of lack of stress and just make everyone feel that they are a part of something," Bociek says.

Last year, Dr. Bociek released a CD called “October Flight,” and all proceeds go to the Patient & Family Assistance Fund at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.

“The money raised from the CD sales helps to pay for meal tickets, an overnight stay, gas money,  the little things that can be big blessings. It helps meet a big unmet need for our patients,” explains Dr. Bociek.
