City Council Approves Entertainment District Tax

Omaha's City Council has approved a proposal that will bring a new entertainment district to Omaha.

The district will sit just to the west of Westroads Mall and will be the new home of popular golf attraction TopGolf. TopGolf's entertainment district will be the second of its kind in Omaha, after the council approved a similar provision for the Capitol District at 10th and Capitol.

With this vote, TopGolf will be able to charge and additional 1.75% tax on beverages, food and other sales in the district. The extra tax will be in addition to state and city taxes, along with Omaha's restaurant tax.

Sales at TopGolf and surrounding businesses are expected to bring in an extra $1 million in tax revenue every year, which would go towards public improvements. The tax does not affect Westroads Mall.

Developers say they hope to have the district open by late 2019, or early 2020. Car dealerships that are currently on the site of the future golf attraction, will be relocated to 168th and West Dodge.
