Two People Dead After School Bus Fire In Iowa

Iowa authorities say two people have died following a school bus fire southeast of Oakland, Iowa.

Carson and Oakland Fire crews were dispatched around 7:00 Tuesday morning after a 9-1-1 call came into Pottawattamie County Communications about a Riverside Community Schools bus that was on fire. Dispatchers contacted Riverside Schools, who confirmed that it was their bus, and they had not been able to contact the bus driver on their cell phone.

When crews arrived they were not able to board the bus, which was fully engulfed in flames, and additional calls to 9-1-1 indicated that two people may not have been able to get off the bus. Once the fire was contained, the remains of two individuals were found on the bus.

Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Deputy Rob Ambrose says the bodies are those of a 16 year old student, Megan Klindt, and the 74 year old driver, Donald Hendricks. "I can tell you that it was backing out of a driveway and ended up in the opposite side ditch. The driver and one student was unable to get off the bus."

Ambrose says they will release the names of the victims Tuesday afternoon.

The incident is under investigation.
