Prayer Vigil Set For Victims Of Deadly School Bus Fire

The Riverside Community School District will hold a community prayer vigil Tuesday night for a student and bus driver who died after the bus caught fire Tuesday morning.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office identified them as 74-year-old Donnie Hendricks of Carson, Iowa and 16 year old Megan Klindt.

The fire happened around 7 a.m. Tuesday at a farm southeast of Oakland. The bus had just picked up Klindt at the farm before it backed across the road and into a ditch. Investigators say the bus was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived.

The Riverside Community School District has about 700 students from the area. The district held classes Tuesday and had counselors available.  The district has postponed basketball games scheduled for Tuesday evening.

A community prayer vigil will be held at the Fellowship Church, 18999 US Highway 59, Oakland, Iowa. The doors will open at 5:30 PM, and a Community Prayer will be offered at 6:30 PM.

"Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones" the district said in a statement. "People are invited to gather together as long as needed. All are welcome."
