Eleven Year Old Helps Mom Delivery Baby During Surprise Birth

An eleven year old girl was put in a surprising situation over the weekend when her baby brother made an unannounced arrival at home.

Mom Lareatha Rahn tells 6 News that her son Malikai is her "miracle baby" after he survived being delivered into the family's bathroom toilet at home. "For him to have fallen into the toilet and nothing to happen to him, it's just a blessing. It really is."

Rahn says she was two days past her due date when late Saturday night she felt intense pressure in her abdomen and went to use the bathroom. "I just felt like I couldn't get off the toilet. I couldn't not push. I tried to hold it in and every time I did I felt strong contractions."

As Rahn pushed, 911 was called, but in the meantime she needed help from her eleven year old daughter Lamya.

Lamya said she wasn't ready for what was happening. "At first I'm like, 'No, I'm not delivering a baby. I'm not touching him after he comes out of you until he's clean!'"

But time was short, and Malikai was on his way into the world as Rahn felt the baby's head hit the water, Lamya said it sounded like the baby was drowning. "So I instantly grabbed him."

Big sister quickly wrapped her baby brother in a towel and a few minutes later paramedics arrived on the scene. The family was taken to Nebraska Medicine, where doctors say all are doing well. Rahn says she is incredibly thankful Lamya jumped into to action to save her brother. "I"m just thankful that she was there in the moment. and I'm really proud of her because she was brave."
