Governor Ricketts Unveils New Pro-Life License Plates

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts unveiled the new “Choose Life” license plate at a Monday morning News Conference in Omaha.

In April, Ricketts signed a bill allowing Nebraskans to display their opposition to abortion on their license plates. He says that the plates are a small step to celebrate Nebraska's culture of pro-life. "You see a mother and her child walking into a beautiful Nebraska sunrise and it's really to symbolize that you're not alone, that there's somebody there for you."

Senator Dan Watermeier, who proposed that bill, said the plates are another way to show how Nebraskans honor the value of human life. "Through our 'Choose Life' license plates we can offer another glimmer of hope to those who face the trying moments that life inevitably sends our way."

Ricketts and Watermeier were joined by Lt. Governor Mike Foley and representatives from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Students for Life, Bethlehem House and other groups.

Opponents of the license plates argued the state should not put political speech on license plates.

Ricketts says beginning January 1st, Nebraskans will be able to display their opposition to abortion. The plates will cost $5 more than standard plates with all revenue will going to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
