Big changes could be coming to the Missouri Riverfront in the metro, and one group wants to make sure the community gets to have a say in any future projects.
The public is invited to a meeting Wednesday night to learn about the project and proposed improvement ideas.
Ken Stinson with the Riverfront Revitalization Committee says five locations along the riverfront are being considered for future projects, including three on the Nebraska side. "We have identified one area of study as the Lewis and Clark Landing. South of that, the Heartland of America Park and then the Gene Leahy Mall."
Two locations on the Iowa side have also been identified as areas for revitalization including a spot just north of Tom Hanafan Park and the stretch between the I-480 bridge and the Council Bluffs casinos.
Stinson says one project idea would provide the Gene Leahy Mall and Heartland of America Park complete revamps by better conjoining the two locates. "Re-configuring that so that it provides a continuous park-like venue all the way to the river."
Included in that plan, Stinson says, is to raise the Gene Leahy Mall to street level to allow for more recreation. "From children's play areas, to dog parks, to venues where you might have a bandstand. So that is just one example of the kinds of thinking we're doing."
The public meeting will be held Wednesday night from 6:00-8:00 at the Omaha Marriott Downtown on second floor in the 'Capitol 1' room. Attendees are encouraged to park in the parking garage located at 12th and Capitol. You can see more details about the proposed projects here.
