State Commissioners To Hand Down Decision On Keystone Pipeline Route

A decision will be handed down Monday morning on the fate of the Keystone XL Pipeline route in Nebraska.

The Nebraska Public Service Commission will meet at 10:00 AM in Lincoln to vote on whether they will allow for construction of the pipeline to go through the state.

Nebraska is the last hold out on the pipeline, and approval of the route from the Commission is the last major hurdle TransCanada would have to clear to move forward with construction. If approved, the route would travel from Alberta, Canada through the United States to the Gulf Coast.

Proponents of the pipeline say the it would bring jobs to the state and decrease the United States' dependence on foreign oil. Opponents say it puts Nebraskans at risk by running the pipeline over the Ogallala Aquifer and that the jobs created would only be for the short-term, not providing long-term stable jobs.

Monday's hearing is open to the public. It will be held at the Nebraska Public Service Commission, 1200 N Street in Lincoln, with doors opening at 9:30 AM.
