Veterans To Be Honored At Lighting Ceremony

Thousands of red, white and blue lights will fill the night sky in honor of our nation's veterans this holiday season.

Wednesday night, The Omaha Parks and Recreation Department will thank vets at their second annual Veterans Shine On lighting ceremony at Memorial Park, just in time for Veteran's Day.

Parks Director Brook Bench tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB that the ceremony is their way of showing the city's appreciation for those that have given their lives for our country. "Memorial Park is a special place in Omaha and we just really wanna showcase this and show our appreciation to all our veterans."

Guest speakers at the lighting ceremony will include Mayor Jean Stothert, Colonel David Berg and General Paul Cohen and feature the Creighton Prep Chamber choir. Attendees can keep warm with hot chocolate while they wait for the switch to be flipped and the lights to adorn the Omaha night sky.

Bench says the lighting ceremony won't be the only time Omahans can enjoy the lights though. "The lights will come around 6:30 and then they will be on all the way through the beginning of January. We will leave them on all through the rest of the holiday season."

Festivities start at 6:00 Wednesday night at Memorial Park.
