Millard South Students Raising Money For Monument

On Thursday night it will be seniors vs students on the basketball floor at Millard South High School. The 7:00 p.m. game is an effort to begin fundraising to place a Gold Star Family Monument memorial in Omaha.

The monument honors family members of service members killed in the line of duty. A Gold Star Family member can be any relative.

The Omaha Public Arts Commission has granted public park space to the monument after a presentation made by Millard South High School DECA members and Millard Public Schools Air Force JROTC cadets.   The two locations being considered are Memorial Park and Heartland of America Park.

DECA Advisor Lynn Hill tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB the goal of the students and cadets is to raise the $30,000 over the next six months.   She says they have made several presentations to local companies for sponsorship.  More presentations will be made as more companies come forth to support the monument. Hill says it is 15-thousand pounds of polished granite and would require 90-100 yards of concrete.

Tickets for Thursday's game will be sold at the door for $5.00 per person.  Retired teacher Larry Ribble will be the lead referee.
