The parents of a 13 year old Hickman girl who died in a tragic five car pile-up late last month near Norris School in Lincoln gave the ultimate gift to several others. Kara Cordell with Nebraska Organ Recovery says Ryan Post’s parents donated her heart, lungs, liver and both kidneys so that others can live.
Cordell says, “Ryan was in a position where she wasn’t 16 so she hadn’t registered herself as a donor but her family was able to look outside of their own grief and see how the gift of Ryan’s organs and tissues could benefit some other family and save another family from the grief they were experiencing at that time. Really, selfless is the best way to describe it.”
Cordell says Ryan’s two kidneys, her heart, lungs and liver were each able to be recovered and were already transplanted into others waiting for that lifesaving gift. "It is already making a difference to them and all the people who love them as well."
Cordell says Nebraska Organ Recovery is reaching out to others and encouraging them to become an organ donor. Each donor has the potential to save up to eight lives and enhance and heal the lives of over 100 people.
Anyone 16 years of age and older can choose to donate their organs. Registering at the DMV is the most common way that people sign up to be a donor. People can also register online at www.nedonation.org.
