Entire Town Transformed Into Haunted Attraction For Halloween

One small Nebraska town will be transformed into a Halloween lovers dream this weekend. 

Brule, just outside of Ogallala, plays host to the 'School District 13 Haunted Attraction' which turns the whole town into a haunted spooktacular. 

School District 13 is the brain child of Jennifer Shipp and her husband John. Jennifer says they had a different haunted attraction, but it was in a poor location, so the Shipp's set out to find a new place to haunt. "We bought the old school building here and transformed it into four haunted attractions and then we set about basically transforming the town as well. So the whole town is haunted."

Shipp says at first the tiny town of about 400 was split on their support of making their sleepy village into a haunted attraction, but now it is a point of pride. School District 13 has the distinction as being the only city in the country that completely transforms for Halloween. Shipp says they set out to have the most original haunts, with actors creating characters that aren't based on any movies. "Having this unique attraction, I wouldn't want it any other way. The thing that makes it unique is the input that we get from all of the volunteers and the people who participate." 

Not only do people from around Nebraska and the Midwest flock to Brule, but Shipp says it has even drawn people from overseas. "People from South Africa, people from Ukraine. We've had people come from long, long distances and I think the reason why they come is because we really try to capture Halloween." 

In addition to the four haunted attractions within the old school building, Shipp says visitors can also ghost hunt in two of the most haunted rooms of the building. "We've found some thing in the coal shed and the boiler room, as we were cleaning it out, that are kind of suggestive and a little bit scary. The energy in those rooms is just...we just kinda hate to go in there. So I feel very confident sending people in there that they'll have an experience because we have had many experiences in those rooms."

School District 13 Haunted Attraction is open Friday and Saturday, October 27th & 28th from 6:00 PM- 11:00 PM MST, and Sunday, October 29th from 6:00 PM-9:00 PM MST.
