The Omaha Public Library is helping those in need and giving patrons a chance to pay off overdue book fines. In exchange for non-perishable food items, fines can be waived from accounts this week.
Omaha Public Library's Borrower Service Manager Megan Klein-Hewett says Food for Fines is a way to get people in the door and help those in need. "We can waive $2 for every item donated, up to a total of $20. All of the donations will go to benefit the Alliance for a Better Omaha."
Klein-Hewett says non-perishable food items can be dropped off at any of the twelve branch locations. "Bring the items to the circulation or service desk and give them to staff. Make sure they have an Omaha Public Library card or photo I.D. with them, so we can locate their account."
Not only are normal canned goods needed, but Klein-Hewett says they are also asking for other less common items. "Canned goods like tuna, chicken, fruit, pumpkin will be accepted. They're also looking for some less commonly donated items like low-sugar cereals, shelf-stable organic and gluten free items, low sodium condiments, some of those healthier items that they don't always get a lot of."
Donations will be accepted through Sunday, October 22nd.
