A California man is behind bars in Nebraska after being caught transporting the extremely dangerous drug Fentanyl.
Authorities say 27 year old Edgar Navarro-Aguirre, from California, was arrested Wednesday at the Amtrak station in Omaha. He is accused of transporting more than fifteen kilos, roughly 33 pounds, of the lethal drug.
Wednesday's Fentanyl seizure is the largest ever in Nebraska and one of the largest in the United States. The drug is 40 to 50 times more potent than Heroin and has lead to thousands of drug overdoses across the country.
Navarro-Aguirre was reportedly traveling on the Amtrak train from California to Chicago and was waiting at the station when a DEA agent, doing routine surveillance, noticed a suspicious bag. When asked if the bag was his, Navarro-Aguirre initially said no but later admitted it was his. He was then asked what the nature of his travel was, to which he said he was from Colorado and was travelling to Chicago to see his sister. The agent asked to see his boarding pass, which showed that he had boarded the train in Sacramento, not Colorado.
Navarro-Aguirre eventually gave consent to have his bag searched when asked, and inside were fifteen packages of white powder, which was determined to be Fentanyl. He now faces a charge of possession with intent to distribute and faces anywhere from ten years to life in prison.
