Humane Society Dogs Get Special Ride Along With La Vista Police

Keep your eyes peeled for some four legged friends out on patrol in La Vista.

On Wednesday, the La Vista Police Department and Nebraska Humane Society partnered in the hopes of finding dogs a new home by bringing them out into the community.

Police Chief Bob Lausten says every two to three weeks a new pup will get to ride along. "Humane Society will have a dog picked out, we have one of our community affairs officers pick the dog up and he becomes a K9 for a day. About four hours on patrol, we'll stop at different venues within La Vista."

Lausten says unlike regular K9 dogs, the guest dogs get special treatment. "The dog actually has a doggie seat belt and will ride in the front seat of the car, as opposed to if it was a K9 unit in a caged car."

The first lucky ride along dog, Mickey, got to go all over town with his handling officer on Wednesday. "They stopped by the library, they went out towards Costco and Southport development, they stopped by Cabela's. We're starting this here in October and hopefully it becomes something that's permanent."

The program will not only get cute puppy faces in front of the community, but will also help dogs better adjust to humans.
