Three Benson Homes Being Rebuilt After Deadly Explosion

It has been more than a year since a gas leak led to a deadly explosion in a Benson neighborhood. Now plans are underway to rebuild three homes that were destroyed near 65th and Sprague.

Habitat for Humanity Omaha has moved into the neighborhood after the homeowners decided to donate the lots their homes once stood on.

"The three homes were slated for demolition, and the owners decided to donate them to Habitat for Humanity to as they tried to make a positive out of the tragic situation," says Sarah Lopez, director of development for Habitat.

Crews are already moving dirt and beginning the building process.  Lopez tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB says nearly 300 Habitat volunteers will begin work on Friday morning.  The organization will host its annual Fall Framing Frenzy event Sept. 29 and 30 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. as well as the following weekend.

Their goal is to put up walls, siding, doors, windows and roofs before they move inside for their winter work.   Habitat hopes to be done with construction in the Spring of 2018 and ready for three families in need to move in.
