Accessory Suspect In 60th & L Shooting Appears In Court

The man arrested as an accessory to a deadly road rage shooting last week has made his first appearance in court.

Omaha Police arrested 24 year old Michael Benson on Saturday and charged him with Accessory to a Felony in connection to the apparent road rage shooting death of James Womack.

Womack was shot after an altercation with another driver at the intersection of 60th and L on Monday, September 18th.

Benson told police his car was stolen on the 17th, but police found surveillance video from a HyVee on 97th and Q that puts Benson in the suspect vehicle just three hours before the crime.

There is also cell phone video that places Benson at the scene of the crime on 60th and L. Police found shell casings in the vehicle as well, have not said where exactly the truck was located when they found it.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine tells WOWT 6 News that Benson being charged as an accessory can mean a number of things. “Being an accessory, at least at this point in time in the investigation, means several things. It’s helping somebody after the fact, providing transportation, not being honest with the police, those are things that are part of an accessory charge, so we’ll see where that leads us."

Police are still searching for another suspect in the shooting. Benson's will have a preliminary hearing November 3rd.
