Truck Driver Shot At 60th And L Dies

Omaha Police say a semi driver who was shot at 60th and L Street Monday afternoon has died.  Officers responding to the intersection just after 4:30 p.m. found 32-year-old James Womack suffering from gunshot wounds.

Womack was rushed to the hospital from the scene with CPR in progress and later died from his injuries. Craig Kellerman was working nearby when the shooting happened.  Kellermam told WOWT 6 News he believes the shooting was due to an incident of road rage.

“Driver of the semi-truck got out, pounded on the window of the pickup. I’m assuming there was some sort of vehicle altercation traffic-wise,” Kellerman said. “He yelled at him. [He] turned around to walk back to his truck. Said whatever he needed to say and was done. And, turned around and he got shot in the back – what I heard – three times.”

Other witnesses were visibly shaken while at the scene.  "There's no reason for that. That's uncalled for, even for being mad at somebody," said Kellerman.

The OPD Homicide Unit was called to help investigators process the scene. Initial reports indicate there may be video of the shooting from a metro bus.

The victim's semi remained at the scene for several hours while officers rerouted traffic around the intersection. Initial reports indicate officers are searching for a Chevy Silverado as the suspect vehicle involved. Witnesses are still being questioned.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 402-444-STOP.
