Man Accused Of Running Cockfighting Operation

An Omaha man has been arrested after Nebraska Humane Society officials uncovered a cockfighting operation at his home near 42nd and H Street Sunday afternoon.

Spokesman Mark Langan tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB they recovered 20 roosters that had injuries consistent with cockfighting.  He says operations like this are hard to find.

"It's not common to find cockfighting operations.  In my 12 years at the Humane Society this was a first.  But it's a serious crime, it's a felony," Langan says.

The roosters were found in cages in a back shed.   Jose Torres was booked on a felony cockfighting charge.

"It's hard to rationalize why someone would want to be involved in cockfighting," Langan says.  "I know there's a large amount of wagering in this blood sport crime, but it kind of defies logic as to why anybody would get involved in something like this."

If you have any information on the cockfighting operation, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP.
